    See below answers to frequently asked questions about coronavirus (COVID-19) related school closures. This is a rapidly evolving situation and these answers can and will change. Thank you so much for your continued understanding and flexibility while we all make adjustments to new directives and orders from our public health officials.     FAQs Regarding Closures

    How long will our schools be closed? 

    (rev 4/1/2020) At this point in time, we will be closed from March 16 to June 3, 2020. We will resume our regular calendar at that time. The district is monitoring information and coordinating with the Santa Clara County Office of Education and all other school districts in the County of Santa Clara and is following the orders of local and state health authorities.

    Is there a possibility that schools would remain closed longer than June 3? 

    (rev 4/1/2020) Yes. We will follow the guidelines and orders of the Santa Clara County Public Health Department in conjunction with the Santa Clara County Office of Education and all 31 school districts in Santa Clara County. All school districts in Santa Clara County have pledged to work together on school closures and the reopening of schools. We will keep you posted as new information becomes available.

    What are the impacts on spring break, the last day of school, graduation, and summer school?

    (rev 3/25/2020) We know that the extension of the school closures bring many questions about upcoming dates and events. We are working through each of these and will communicate updates with you as soon as we can.

    Will you be offering distance learning?

    (rev 3/19/2020) Beginning Monday, March 16, students and families can visit our Optional Learning Resources webpages for educational enrichment. While our special education centers will also close, students and families will continue to have access to services from the regional centers they currently rely on. The week of March 16, teachers will be working on compacting their educational plans for the remainder of the school year to ensure all students receive essential learning this school year. 

    The week of March 23, we will be launching distance learning. We know that distance learning is critical to maintain student academic progress. We thank our staff who are working with deliberate speed to put all the pieces of our distance learning program in place. Visit our Distance Learning webpages for more information.

    How will the closures impact the school year? Will we have to make up lost days at the end of the school year? 

    (rev 3/18/2020) At this time, we are not expecting to have to make up lost days. The Governor’s Executive Order N-26-20 allows school districts to continue to receive uninterrupted funding from the state and the closures will not impact the 175-day requirement of the instructional calendar if the district’s superintendent certifies that the closure occurred to address COVID-19, which we did. Our school year will end on June 3, 2020. 

    Will the closures impact the total credits earned for my spring coursework? 

    (rev 3/18/2020) No. The second semester will be shortened. You will earn all the credits that you are enrolled in if you pass all your classes (i.e., if you are enrolled in six classes and you pass all six classes, you will earn 30 credits).

    Will my transcript be impacted in any way? 

    (rev 3/18/2020) No. Your transcript will not be affected in any way. It will show all courses taken this semester and full credits earned with each course that has been passed. 

    Will Advancement Placement (AP) still happen? How should we continue to prepare for these exams? 

    (rev 3/20/2020) At this point in time, AP exams will still take place in May. AP teachers will be providing online support with resources, lectures, YouTube videos, etc., to help with your studies. The College Board also announced on March 20 that it is providing free remote learning resources and developing a new at-home testing option, visit College Board AP Updates for more information. Khan Academy also has online resources. Students are encouraged to set up chat groups to support each other to get through the remaining coursework and to help with exam review.

    How do we continue to provide access to learning for ALL students? 

    (rev 3/18/2020) We are preparing to launch distance learning on Tuesday, March 24th for grades 6-12 and Monday, March 30th for grades Pre-K-5. In the meantime, students and families should visit our Optional Learning Resources webpages to support continued learning. We highly encourage you to continue reading and stimulating your learning during our school closures.

    How long will the district be providing free “grab and go” breakfast and lunch meal service while schools are closed? 

    (rev 3/18/2020) Anyone who is 18 years old or younger and developmentally disabled adults in our community may receive a “grab and go” style breakfast and lunch for weekdays for the duration of our school closure. Every Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., five days’ worth of “grab and go” breakfast and lunches will be provided at seven locations until further notice. Currently, those locations are Mayne Elementary, Montague Elementary, Callejon K-8, Buchser Middle, Cabrillo Middle, Peterson Middle and Wilcox High school. We may increase or reduce the number of sites depending on participation at each site. Regardless of the number of sites, students may go to any location, on Mondays, to pick up five breakfasts and five lunches for the week.


    FAQs Regarding Distance Learning

    How will the school share learning experiences with families? 

    (3/20/2020) SCUSD will use a multi-pronged approach to help families engage with learning during our distance learning program. Teachers will post assignments in Google Classroom and meet with students via Google Meet Monday through Thursday based on the schedules outlined above. Additionally, teachers may have synchronous online office hours where learners and parents/guardians can meet and discuss the learning modules that have been developed. Also, teachers and administrators will respond to all emails from learners and parents as soon as possible and at a maximum of within 24 hours.

    How do I support my child’s learning if we have multiple children at home? 

    (3/20/2020) Creating schedules and having quiet places for study will help when multiple children are attempting their school work each day. 

    How will learning experiences in the early years be designed for distance learning? 

    (3/20/2020) Videos may be posted by each child’s teacher that will take them through similar activities that they would participate in while on campus (e.g. reading, phonics, number sense, movement). These videos will be intended to be watched in 15 minute segments or less. We recommend increased reading to your child. Make learning fun through daily activities and chores at home (sort laundry, count items around the house, practice language in your everyday environment).

    How will I know that my child is staying on track with their learning?

    (3/20/2020) There are many ways in which SCUSD teachers will be involved in monitoring the progress of students and sharing this information with families. Your child’s teacher is still providing feedback through our various digital platforms and will be available to students and their families during designated office hours. SCUSD will also monitor attendance data to ensure that students are engaged in their learning and to follow up with families where there are concerns.

    What learning services will be available during distance learning? 

    (3/20/2020) All of them! SCUSD will continue to offer the same high-quality learning experience in a distance learning environment that it does on campus, to the extent possible. Classroom teachers, specialist teachers, counselors, and leadership team members will all be available to ensure that our learners are engaged in their learning and receiving the support they need. 

    What if my child has an IEP or receives Special Education services? 

    (3/20/2020) Santa Clara Unified School District is currently investigating all possible service delivery methods to provide Special Education supports and services. Student's Individual Education Plans will be carefully reviewed and services will be based on individual student needs.     FAQs Regarding Technology Issues

    How do I access student resources on a personal device?

    (rev 3/21/2020) A student can log in to the Chrome browser with their account or you can access the resources at Santa Clara Unified Student Resources.

    Who do I contact for a technology-related problem or issue? 

    (rev 3/21/2020) Contact the SCUSD Help Desk, Monday - Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. by emailing or texting (408) 900-6867. Please provide a thorough description of the problem and, if required, we will schedule a video conference to discuss further at a convenient time. In the same way that Google Meet is a great way for you to have contact with your child’s teacher, an appointment can be scheduled for any virtual tech support you may need.

    What can I do if I do not have access to a computing device at home? 

    (rev 4/1/2020) After our Chromebook pick up days the week of March 23, consistent with our existing practice, students can contact their site principal or our IT Help Desk at to request the use of a Chromebook. Students should send an email with the request and provide the following information: Student Name, Student ID#, Grade, School. Your principal or our IT department will follow up with a date and time to pick up a Chromebook. Understand that this is a loan of a district-owned Chromebook and you will sign a Use Agreement form to receive it.

    How do I get help using Google Meet?

    What are the requirements for Google Meet? 

    (rev 3/21/2020)  For Google Meet video meetings, you need:

    • A broadband connection to the internet.
    • A built-in web camera or external USB camera. Note: Other devices, such as virtual cameras, might not work with Google Meet.
    • 2.2 GHz Intel 2nd-generation i3/i5/i7, AMD equivalent or better, processor to support HD video.

    What are the hardware requirements for distance learning? 

    (rev 3/21/2020) A tablet that can run Google Chrome, a Chromebook, a Windows 10 or Mac OS 10.10 or later, or Linux 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04+, Debian 8+, openSUSE 13.3+, or Fedora Linux 24+. Chrome browser system requirements.

    What if I don’t have access to wireless internet? 

    (rev 3/21/2020) If none of the below options works for your family, please contact your student’s principal to request a wireless access point. There are a limited amount of access points and they will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

    • Comcast Xfinity has wifi hotspots available in most neighborhoods that are open to use by anyone. Additionally, Comcast Xfinity is currently offering its Internet Essentials program free for two months to new customers, no credit check or contract. The internet provider is also automatically increasing speeds for all Internet Essentials customers. 
    • AT&T provides a low-cost Internet for $10 a month called AT&T Access.
    • Spectrum/Charter, offers free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription. To enroll call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. 


    FAQs Regarding Special Education

    Will the special education staff conduct my child’s previously scheduled IEP meeting during the time the district is closed?

    (3/19/2020) Your child’s case manager will contact you and offer to conduct IEP meetings which are due during this period. 

    Should the family and service providers agree to conduct an IEP during the closure, how may a parent participate in a previously scheduled IEP?

    (3/19/2020) In order to keep people safe and healthy, you may choose to participate telephonically or through Google Meet. You may request to delay the meeting if you prefer to meet in person when school resumes at the site.

    Will the special education staff continue to assess my child if she/he had an Assessment Plan that I signed before the closure? 

    (3/19/2020) During this time, staff will be able to complete assessments through review of records and interview with parents and staff via phone or online. Direct assessment with the student will be delayed until school resumes. 

    What if my child receives Speech and Language Services?

    (3/23/2020) All students with group services on their IEPs will receive at least push in services  at least one time per week provided through google classroom for expressive/receptive & pragmatics. For students with 1:1 individual direct services, we are continuing to work on a plan for how these services will be delivered. 

    During the closure, what happens with due dates regarding assessing and conducting an IEP?

    (3/19/2020) All IEP timelines have not been suspended by the California Department of Education (CDE). We will provide additional guidance from the CDE should that change. 

    What will happen if I decline online services?

    (3/19/2020) Students with disabilities must be provided access to the same level of learning opportunities as their general education peers. The district will provide learning opportunities via distance learning and encourage participation daily. This will be done using Google Classroom and Google Meet. Hard copies of lessons may be provided per request. Case Managers will provide information on the process for assignments and expectations for demonstration of student work. Please contact your case manager with additional questions.

    Will I receive the teaching/learning packet or emailed curriculum/projects when I have declined my child’s participation? 

    (3/19/2020) Student attendance will be taken each day. Staff will reach out to families to encourage participation, provide support, and learning packets available online as well as hard copy materials for pick up if requested. Every effort will be made to provide your child with access to education during this time. 

    How do my child’s special education providers maintain confidentiality when my child participates in a small group therapy session using Google Meet? 

    (3/19/2020) Services during this time will be tailored to the distance learning platform which will be used for education purposes only. Any questions or concerns regarding individual students must be addressed to your student’s case manager. Confidentiality will be maintained for all students.

    How much time is legally required for services?

    (3/19/2020) At this point in time, there has not been any waiver from the federal government with respect to FAPE obligations. With this being said, given the exceptional circumstances, it has been explicitly recognized by both state and federal authorities that IEPs may not be able to be implemented as written. Specifically, the standard being promulgated at this time is that students’ IEPs should be implemented to the greatest extent possible/practicable under the circumstances. This includes, but is not limited to, related services included within a student’s IEP, and supports such as assistive technology. In other words, we just have to do the best we can. We must think of creative ways to deliver services - electronic means, telephone, and paper copies of work are just a few ideas. Services will look differently during this time period. 

    Will the district keep student attendance regarding special education services? 

    (3/19/2020) Yes, special education teachers/specialists will maintain records regarding contacts and attempted contacts and services provided to our students.

    What happens with compensatory time? 

    (3/19/2020) Staff will maintain records regarding teaching/serving contacts and attempted contacts with every special education student. If you have any questions about services, please contact your case manager.
